The No. 1-ranked golfer in the world has been detained by police in Louisville, Kentucky.
According to ESPN’s Jeff Darlington, Scottie Scheffler was taken away in handcuffs outside of Valhalla Golf Club ahead of Round 2 of the PGA Championship.
Darlington, who witnessed the incident, reports that Scheffler was attempting to drive around “what he believed to be security” at around 5:45 a.m. However, the police presence was instead a response to an incident where a bus fatally struck a pedestrian.
Darlington says Scheffler attempted to go around and enter the course when officers told him to stop. Things began to escalate from there.
“When he didn’t stop, the police officer attached himself to the vehicle. Scheffler then traveled another 10 yards before stopping the car,” Darlington said on ESPN.
Darlington says that the officer then pulled Scheffler from the vehicle and placed him into handcuffs. After that point, the incident was recorded in a video that Darlington posted to social media, where Scheffler is seen being taken away in handcuffs.
“He’s going to jail, and there ain’t nothing you can do about it. Period,” an officer told Darlington in the video.
ESPN has yet to report the nature of charges Scheffler may face.
Darlington described Scheffler as confused, stating that the golfer did not appear to understand the magnitude of the situation.
“(He was) very stunned about what was happening, looked toward me as he was in those handcuffs and said, ‘Please help me,’” Darlington said on ESPN. “He very clearly did not know what was happening in this situation. It moved very quickly, very rapidly, very aggressively.”
Round 2 of the PGA Championship is set to take place Friday. The start of Round 2 had been delayed due to the accident near the course, the event announced.
