Worcester State sheltering in place after shooting; no campus threat, police say

Worcester State University was under a shelter-in-place order Saturday following a shooting, police said, but officials stressed there was no threat to the campus community.

The shooting did not involve any students and there was “no ongoing incident” on campus, Worcester Police Department spokesperson Lt. Sean Murtha said Saturday morning.

There was “no immediate threat to campus,” Worcester State said in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

The school first announced the shelter-in-place order in a post just before 3 a.m.

School officials later advised students to stay indoors and canceled all university events, both on- and off-campus.

Around 7:30 a.m., the school said the Chandler Street campus would be closed on Saturday.

Murtha said the Massachusetts State Police is investigating the shooting.

The state police and office of Worcester District Attorney Joseph Early did not immediately respond to a request for additional details.
