Worcester police ID victims, seek suspect in fatal shooting of mother, daughter

Worcester police are searching for a 27-year-old man in connection with a Tuesday shooting that resulted in the deaths of a mother and daughter.

Dejan Belnavis is wanted on charges of armed assault with intent to murder and possession of a firearm without a license, Worcester police said in a press release Wednesday night. He should be considered armed and dangerous.

Belnavis is wanted in connection with the deaths of Chastity and Zella Nunez, police said. Zella was just 11 years old when she was killed.

Worcester police have already arrested one person in connection with the Nunezes deaths. The department said it will release information about that suspect in the future.

The mother and daughter were shot in a parked SUV in the area of Englewood Avenue and 1 Lisbon St. around 3 p.m. on March 5, police said previously. They were taken to a hospital where they were declared dead.

“Today we mourn the senseless loss of two Worcester residents, a mother and daughter whose lives were taken far too soon and far too tragically,” city leaders said in a joint statement Wednesday. “The residents of Worcester deserve better, and we will stand alongside our community in sorrow and solidarity.”

Police are still investigating the shooting. Anyone with information about it is asked to call Worcester detectives at 508-799-8651 or submit a tip online at worcesterma.gov/police.

No further information about the shooting has been released.
