Worcester Police custodian says birth of mixed-race grandson led to discrimination

A custodian of the Worcester Police Department has filed a discrimination complaint against the city and multiple police department employees claiming he was subjected to racist ridicule following the birth of his mixed-race grandson, and retaliation after he complained of disparaging treatment.

Daniel P. Friend, who is white, claimed a detective he had once been friends with made repeated snide and humiliating remarks after the grandchild’s birth in 2021. He also claimed the detective, Paul E. Lawrence, once used the n-word as the pair played golf together.
