A 26-year-old Worcester man was indicted Monday on a manslaughter charge in connection with a fatal shooting in the city in June.
Enrique Antonio Canales-Martinez is accused of killing Jason Mayhew, 36, of Worcester on June 21, according to the Worcester County District Attorney’s office. Canales-Martinez was arraigned on the manslaughter charge in Worcester Superior Court on Tuesday, where he was ordered held on $100,000 bail.
On June 21, Worcester police went to the area of Southgate Street, where they found Mayhew lying on the sidewalk suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Officers immediately began rendering aid to Mayhew, who was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, District Attorney Joseph Early Jr.’s office said in a statement.
After police arrested Canales-Martinez, he “admitted to officers having shot the victim,” police wrote in a report filed in court.
Canales-Martinez was initially arraigned two days later on four counts: armed assault to murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon with serious bodily injury, assault and battery with a firearm, and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling. He has been in custody since his arraignment.
