Worcester father killed in shooting loved playing soccer with his sons, took pride in his work

A Worcester man killed in a shooting at an apartment building last month was remembered for his love of outdoor activities and using that time with his sons and stepsons, his obituary read.

Officers responded to multiple calls about gunfire at the Southgate Street apartments at around 7:40 p.m. on June 21, Worcester police said. At the scene, they found a man lying on the sidewalk. Officers tried to revive the man, Jason Mayhew, 36, and he was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Mayhew was born on July 20, 1988, in Framingham to Richard and Betsy Mayhew, both of Wrentham, his family wrote. He was a graduate of King Philip High School.

A skilled heavy equipment operator, Mayhew has a passion for trucks and machinery, “and took great pride in his work,” his obituary read.

“An adventurous spirit, Jason found joy in all activities outdoors,” his family wrote. “Whether he was skydiving, scuba diving or simply fishing, he enjoyed the freedom and thrill that nature had to offer. He found great joy sharing his love of fishing with his two sons and his future stepsons.

“He was one of a kind and could be found jamming out to music when driving, wearing pink, baseball hats and sunglasses (he had so many!), singing karaoke, and celebrating Pride Month — every month,” his family continued.

Mayhew “loved life in general,” with his interests and “likes” including soccer with his sons; driving trucks, Jeeps and motorcycles; going fishing or skydiving; eating Chinese food and Prudent Island zucchini muffins; true crime podcasts and much more, his family said.

Mayhew is survived by his fiancée, Ashley During; his sons and her two children; his father, Richard Mayhew and his wife Pam Mayhew; his mother, Betsy Mayhew; his sister; stepbrother; grandmothers; his niece and nephew; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

A celebration of Mayhew’s life will be held on Sunday, Sept. 21, from 12 to 4 p.m. at Novatos Bar and Grill in Norfolk, his obituary read. Guests are asked to wear pink, Mayhew’s favorite color.

“He will be remembered for his adventurous heart, dedication to his family, and love and laughter he gave those around him,” his family wrote.
