Worcester employee payroll 2023: How much did police, fire employees make?

Worcester police officers earned among the highest salaries paid to city employees last year, while firefighters barely broke into the top 100 earners in the city, according to data made available to MassLive.

Of the city’s top 50 earners, 44 work or previously worked for the Worcester Police Department, starting with former Police Chief Steven Sargent as the city’s third-highest earner. He earned $276,639 in 2023 — a $9,423 increase from 2022, when he was also the third-highest earner. Included in his income last year was $169,831 for his annual salary and $106,808 for adjusted/retroactive/other pay.

Next is Interim Chief Paul Saucier, who made $254,828 in 2023. Saucier made $12,267 more than he earned in 2022. Saucier was named as interim police chief on Sept. 1, 2023, after Chief Steven Sargent retired. Included in Saucier’s 2023 income was $211,236 for his annual salary, $36,395 for pay detail and $7,197 for adjusted/retroactive/other pay.
