The Worcester Red Sox continued their dominant run against the St. Paul Saints on Friday night, pulling out a 5-3 win at CHS Field to take a 4-0 lead in the series.
After a scoreless first half of the game, Trayce Thompson broke the silence with a solo home run in the top of the fifth, putting the WooSox on the board. Eduardo Julian answered back for St. Paul (44-54) in the sixth with a solo homer of his own that leveled the score.
Worcester (51-48) regained the lead in the seventh when Blaze Jordan drew a walk and later came around to score after Ronaldo Hernández earned a bases-loaded walk, giving the WooSox a 2-1 edge.
Then the game took a sharp turn in the eighth. Vaughn Grissom stepped up and delivered the biggest hit of the night — a three-run homer that stretched Worcester’s lead to 5-1.
The Saints tried to rally in the bottom of the frame, with Aaron Sabato launching a solo home run and Austin Martin adding an RBI double to narrow the deficit to 5-3. But the comeback stalled there, as St. Paul couldn’t push across any more runs in the ninth.
Bryan Mata came out of the bullpen to earn the win for Worcester, logging 1.1 innings and boosting his record to 3-1, despite a 5.70 ERA.
The two teams will meet again Saturday for Game 5 of the series at 7:37 p.m.
