Woman who says jail staff ignored pregnancy concerns granted new trial

Lidia Lech was pregnant in 2013 when she served time for a probation violation at the Western Massachusetts Regional Women’s Correctional Center in Chicopee. She says she began to worry about her pregnancy, but jail medical staff brushed off and ignored her complaints about her symptoms. A few months later, she delivered a stillborn baby.

She filed a civil lawsuit in federal court, but a jury decided in June 2022 that members of the Hampden County Sheriff’s Office and a Baystate Health doctor were not responsible for the death of Lech’s unborn child.
