Woman dies after being hit by car near Market Basket in Mass.

A woman died after she was hit by a car near a Market Basket in Chelsea late Friday, according to police.

Officers responded to a report of a pedestrian hit by a car on Second Street in Chelsea shortly after 7:15 p.m. Friday, Chelsea Chief of Police Keith Houghton said in a statement.

Police arrived at the scene and immediately gave medical aid to the woman on the sidewalk near 240 Second St., which is located outside a Market Basket grocery store. However, she died from her injuries, according to Houghton’s statement.

The driver of the car that hit the woman remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators, the statement said.

The name of the woman who died is being withheld from the public until her family is notified, according to the police chief.

The Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section is assisting the Chelsea Police Department in the ongoing investigation.
