Woman, 72, dies in fatal Fourth of July crash in Middleborough

A 72-year-old woman was killed in a fatal Fourth of July crash in Middleborough.

The crash happened Friday, July 4 at 8:27 a.m. in the area of 446 Wareham St. (Route 28), Middleborough police said.

Upon arrival, officers found a car that had left the road and crashed into a wooded area. The woman driving the car, identified as Susan Sumner, of Middleborough, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash prompted State troopers to close the ramps from I-495 to Route 28 (Exit 8) just after 9 a.m., Massachusetts State Police previously told MassLive. The interstate was said to have been completely reopened as of 12:50 p.m.

The crash remains under investigation by the Middleborough Police Department alongside State Police detectives attached to the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office and CRASH Investigative Team.
