WMass Tournament Boys Hockey Roundup: Ludlow, Longmeadow, Agawam, Taconic advance to semis

Class A quarterfinals

No. 5 Longmeadow (4), No. 4 Minnechaug (1)

No. 5 Longmeadow rode the momentum of two-goal second and third periods to top No. 4 Minnechaug in the Class A quarterfinals at Olympia Ice Center in West Springfield on Monday afternoon.

Alex Hensch starred for Longmeadow, scoring just 52 seconds into the second period to kickstart the Lancers’ offense. Hensch closed out the game as well with a short-handed goal in the final minutes of the third to send his team to the semifinals.

Anthony DiPietro and Matt Desrosiers also found the back of the net on Monday to extend the lead to 3-0 before Minnechaug’s Colin Keane cut the deficit to 3-1.

Ultimately it was too little, too late for Minnechaug which couldn’t get enough shots past Lancers’ goaltender Jackson Blais to keep up.

Longmeadow will now advance to the semifinals where it will meet No. 1 Westfield on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. back at the Olympia Ice Center.

No. 6 Ludlow (3), No. 3 Greenfield (2)

No. 6 Ludlow earned a tight, one-goal victory over No. 3 Greenfield in the Class A quarterfinals on Monday night at Collins-Moylan Arena in Greenfield.

After trailing by a goal heading into the first intermission, the Lions scored a pair in the second and grabbed a lead they would never relinquish.

Nathan Ribeiro shined in the win, factoring in on all three Ludlow goals. Ribeiro found twine twice and also added in another assist to propel his team to a win.

Ludlow goaltender Donald Rogers also had a big night in between the pipes, saving 32 of the 34 shots sent his way.

On the other side, Greenfield’s Nico Siano and Jack Laurie both scored in the loss.

Ludlow will now prepare for the semifinals where it will take on No. 2 East Longmeadow on Tuesday at 8:10 p.m. at the Olympia Ice Center.

Class B quarterfinals

No. 3 Taconic (8), No. 6 Chicopee (5)

No. 3 Taconic earned a high-scoring victory against No. 6 Chicopee in the Class B quarterfinals on Monday night at the Boys and Girls Club of Pittsfield.

Taconic’s Luke Naventi led the way, scoring a hat trick and also adding an assist in an eight-goal onslaught for the Thunder. Naventi scored early and often on Monday, finding the back of the net twice in just under a minute of gametime in the second period.

Jackson Schneider also had success in the scoring department, connecting on two goals on the night. Taconic goaltender J.J. Schneider held things down in net with 39 saves.

Taconic will now have a short turnaround as it faces No. 2 Easthampton in the semifinals on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Olympia Ice Center.

No. 5 Agawam (5), No. 4 Amherst (4), OT

The Brownies will play in the Class B semifinal round after a thrilling overtime victory in Monday night’s quarterfinal round at Orr Rink in Amherst.

Agawam will meet top-seeded McCann Tech in the semis on Tuesday at 5:40 p.m. at Olympia Ice Center in West Springfield.

Andy Holton scored two goals and assisted on two others for the Brownies, including the game-winning goal in overtime with a feed from Kaeden Clifford.

Braden Parrelli had two goals for Agawam (3-14), while Nick Brown also found the back of the net in the win. Jackson Bates and Casey Thomas dished out two assists apiece, and goaltender Brady Blanchette made 17 saves in the Brownies net.

Sawyer Ferro tallied twice for the Hurricanes (6-11-2), and Ethan Mooney notched three assists. Graham Arguin and Brody Palmisano also scored goals, and goalie Jason Kim impressed with 39 saves on the night.
