WMass Softball Roundup: Pittsfield fends off Minnechaug

In a high-octane matchup that saw over 25 runs cross the plate, No. 15 Pittsfield softball successfully fought off a tenacious effort from No. 17 Minnechaug, winning 15-12 on Friday afternoon.

Gianna Levardi led off the game with a solo home run for the Generals and Sadie Aitken did the same in the second. But Minnechaug cracked open a four-run inning in the bottom half of the frame to take the lead.

But Pittsfield tagged the Falcons back in the third with three runs, taking a one-run lead. Minnechaug leveled the score with a sac fly from Kaelyn Dionne, but the Generals had no plan of slowing down on offense. The visitors tacked on two more runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, taking advantage of errors and padding their lead.

The insurance runs proved crucial when Minnechaug ripped open a five-run inning in the bottom of the sixth, cutting the deficit to one entering the final inning.

But the Generals regained the majority of their advantage behind a four-run, seventh-inning push highlighted by a three-run home run from Neveah Lopez.

Minnechaug did well to claw itself within striking distance after bringing in two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but the deficit proved too much to overcome.

Pittsfield (5-5) will look for its fifth straight win when the Generals host No. 4 Greenfield on Saturday, May 3 at noon.

Minnechaug (4-7) will look to bounce back and snap its three-game skid when the Falcons visit Monson on Saturday, May 3 at 1 p.m.
