Sometimes, neither team deserves the loss, but only one team gets to walk away the winner.
On Friday night, it was the Belchertown boys volleyball team that was the unfortunate ones against Veritas Prep Charter School, who pulled out a slim 3-2 victory on their home floor.
The match remained incredibly close throughout, with four of the five sets being decided by a margin of three points or less.
Belchertown won the opening set 25-23, before Veritas took each of the next two. With the Vipers poised to sink their teeth into the Orioles, Belchertown averted defeat with a 25-16 win in the fourth frame.
The two teams traded points back and forth in the fifth and final frame. In the end, it was Veritas that came out on top.
Samuel Cruz led all players with 21 kills for the Vipers, while the Orioles’ Colin Mullin collected 45 assists.
Veritas improved to an even 5-5 with the win and awaits a meeting with Chicopee High School on Monday. After falling to 2-12, Belchertown turns the page to a matchup against Frontier Regional on Tuesday.
