With rate hike, Eversource natural gas customers take it on the chin (Viewpoint)

I’m extremely disappointed and angry with the state Department of Public Utilities for approving the full 25% to 30% natural gas rate increase as requested by Eversource.

Typically, a utility comes in with a high number knowing that the DPU will respond with what it considers a reasonable compromise. This year, the DPU just passed it on through as is to consumers. I’m also curious as to why National Grid, another provider of natural gas to retail customers, only requested and received a 11% to 13% increase.

The federal Energy Information Agency published its Winter Fuels Outlook 2024/2025. In this report, the agency stated that wholesale natural gas prices are lower than last year, with a projected 1% increase in the Northeast due to a weather forecast of winter temperatures 5% colder than last year.
