Brad Marchand will enter unfamiliar territory this summer when he hits free agency for the first time in his career.
The former Bruins captain spent his entire 16-year career in Boston before he was traded to the Florida Panthers in March. While Marchand missed some time due to injury, he’s fared quite nicely during Florida’s playoff run with 14 points in 17 games.
What’s next for Marchand is unknown. And in a recent interview with SportsNet’s Elliotte Friedman, the 37-year-old opened up about his future.
“I’ve thought about potential situations. But until you know what options are (out there) — it’s all theoretical,” Marchand said. “So, I kind of parked all that. And I’m just — especially right now — just being in the moment and enjoying it. I don’t want to take anything away from it.”
Free agency doesn’t begin until July 1, but that will come quick — especially if the Stanley Cup Final goes seven games.
Marchand will likely have plenty of teams interested. And while he has spent his career being a rival of Canadian teams, could the Nova Scotia native see himself playing in his home country?
“Anything’s on the table,” Marchand told Friedman. “I’m gonna listen to anything. We’ll deal with it when the time comes, and we’ll see what the right fit is.”
