Wind, high seas from Hurricane Humberto to impact Mass. on Tuesday

The effects of Hurricane Humberto are expected to impact Massachusetts on Tuesday.

The coast of Massachusetts is under a Small Craft Advisory until 8 p.m. on Tuesday, when a Gale Warning will take effect and remain in place until 5 a.m. Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.

Wind gusts could reach up to 40 mph across Cape Cod and the Islands on Tuesday “as Hurricane Humberto makes its closest approach,“ the Weather Service said.

Moderate winds between 10 and 20 mph are expected throughout most of the day, with temperatures in the high 60s to low 70s under mostly sunny skies.

Forecasters predict waves between 5 and 8 feet along the Massachusetts coastline on Tuesday. Overnight, those waves could increase to between 7 and 12 feet as the strongest winds begin to hit, forecasters said.

The advisory and warning are issued for coastal waters extending from Provincetown down to Chatham, and for those around Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard.

These strong winds will cause hazardous seas, forecasters warned, which could capsize or damage boats and reduce visibility. Forecasters advised mariners to alter their plans and remain in port, seek safe harbor, change course and secure their vessels.

Further inland, across Central and Western Massachusetts, temperatures should reach the mid-70s to near 80 on Tuesday, with lighter breezes expected in those regions.

Much of the southern East Coast was under a Tropical Storm Warning on Tuesday.
