Wilbraham police officer gets award after rescuing couple in dangerous waters

The Wilbraham Select Board has honored a Wilbraham police officer who put his life at risk, swimming in dangerous water conditions to save a couple floating downstream in an inflatable raft.

As the raft floated away, one of the individuals jumped overboard, attempting to swim the raft to shore, but became entangled in the raft’s anchor and was pulled underwater by the current. The Chicopee River Reservoir had increased water volume on July 14 due to heavy rains in the area, according to police.
