‘Widespread’ showers, thunderstorms possible in Mass. on Friday

After a week of high heat and humidity, Massachusetts is set to receive heavy rain Friday night with National Weather Service forecasters warning of flooding in most areas of the state.

During the day on Friday, there is a chance for isolated showers or storms, but any storms that do develop are not likely to last very long, according to the weather service. Temperatures will be hot and humid again with a mix of sun and clouds.

High temperatures are expected to be in the upper 80s for most of the region, with temperatures feeling warmer, in the low 90s.

But as Friday turns to Saturday, “the atmosphere will be ripe for heavy rainfall,” forecasters wrote, with a possibility of up to 2.2 inches.

The rain will continue for most of the day Saturday, with heavy downpours moving into Western Massachusetts and Connecticut a few hours before sunrise, according to the weather service. Showers and thunderstorms will continue to move east throughout the morning.

Saturday could also bring “excessive rainfall,” and in turn, chances of flash flooding. Some areas could even see as much as 5 inches of rain on Saturday, though forecasters say there is “considerable uncertainty” about which areas of the state will see the most rain.

While the rain will keep temperatures down slightly on Saturday, forecasters say it will still be warm and muggy. And the heat and humidity will return on Sunday, with the possibility of feels-like temperatures exceeding 100 degrees.
