Why Rafael Devers is not in Red Sox lineup for series finale vs. Astros

BOSTON — Rafael Devers is not in the Red Sox lineup for the series finale vs. the Astros on Sunday.

“He’s been grinding through it and I think it makes sense today and hopefully tomorrow he’ll be back,” manager Alex Cora said.

Devers said after Saturday’s game he was grinding through some things physically without pinpointing anything specific. It’s more general soreness.

The Red Sox are trying to salvage the final game of this three-game series after losing 8-4 on Friday and 5-4 on Saturday. First pitch from Fenway Park is scheduled for 1:35 p.m.

Nick Sogard is at third base. David Hamilton will play shortstop and Enmanuel Valdez is at second base vs. Astros righty Hunter Brown (9-7, 3.98 ERA).

Righty James Paxton (9-3, 4.42 ERA) will make the start for Boston.
