Why officials ejected Jayson Tatum in Celtics’ win over 76ers

BOSTON — As Jayson Tatum kept jawing to the officials in Friday’s game against the 76ers, not one but two officials gave him his second technical foul of the night. That led to an ejection as the Celtics star hit the locker room early with 1.1 seconds left in the third quarter.

It was an overall frustrating night for Tatum was he complained to the officials at multiple points. On the play that led to his ejection, he was stripped of the ball then appeared to get Robert Covington in the face. The play led to an offensive foul call, along with his seventh turnover of the night. Tatum was called for his first tech of the night in the first quarter.

After review, the officials hit Tatum with a flagrant foul, though he was already off to the locker room. Tatum finished with 21 points and seven rebounds. Crew chief Bill Kennedy talked about the ejection in a pool report after the game.

“Following a loose ball foul that was called on Jayson, Jayson continued to complain and was asked multiple times to head to his bench,” Kennedy said of the ejection. “He continued to complain about the foul called on the floor and overtly gestures toward the officials and was assessed a second technical foul.”

The Celtics went on to beat the Sixers 125-119 on Friday at TD Garden to improve to 15-4. Tatum said postgame he was “shocked” by the ejection as he didn’t necessarily say anything that would get him tossed. Kennedy said Tatum was thrown out because of the second tech, not necessarily statements that would have prompted an ejection regardless of his tech count.

Regardless, the C’s were still able to come away with the victory, though Tatum did get his second career ejection. He added he doesn’t think he got his money’s worth because he wasn’t jawing at the officials in an aggressive manner.
