Why it’s illegal for Mass. teachers to strike (and why they do anyway)

Students in three North Shore school districts have missed over a week of school due to teacher strikes even though such work stoppages are illegal in Massachusetts. As contract negotiations between Gloucester, Beverly and Marblehead school administrators and their respective teachers unions have been over issues like educator salaries and paid family leave.

While it is rare to see three teachers unions striking at the same time, these work stoppages have been the latest in a string that have impacted Massachusetts communities in recent years as educators and local governments struggle to agree on a new vision for school safety and educator benefits in a post-COVID world. Earlier this year, the 11-school-day Newton teachers strike became the longest teacher work stoppage the state has seen since the 1990s, The Boston Globe reported.
