The Storm were down big and facing elimination in Game 2, but they fought back from a 14-point second half deficit and grabbed the season-saving victory thanks to a go-ahead and-1 from rookie Dominique Malonga inside the final minute and a game-sealing jumper from Skylar Diggins in the final seconds. Diggins finished with 26 while Nneka Ogwumike went for 24 and 10 rebounds as Malonga and Erica Wheeler both provided 11 off the bench.
Three-time MVP and Aces leader A’ja Wilson was named a Co-Defensive Player of the Year on Thursday along with Alanna Smith of the Minnesota Lynx, who clinched their spot in the Second Round on Wednesday after a 17-point comeback against the Golden State Valkyries.
In Game 2, Wilson went for 21 points, 13 rebounds, five assists, two blocks and a steal while teammate Jackie Young went for 25 points, five rebounds and four assists in a losing effort. Wilson missed a jumper late that led to Malonga’s go-ahead bucket, an Young was supposed to be the recipient of a Chelsea Gray pass on the following possession that went out of bounds with the Aces down 1. And in the final possession, former Storm player Jewell Loyd missed on a game-tying attempt from 3, finishing with 13 points and going three-for-seven on attempts from distance.
The winner advances to the Second Round where they will take on the winner of the first game on Thursday between the Atlanta Dream and Indiana Fever.
