It is an annual NHL tradition, and on Friday, Jan. 2, the NHL Winter Classic comes to loanDepot park in Miami where the two-time defending Stanley Cup Champion Florida Panthers are playing host to the New York Rangers.
This NHL game is scheduled to start at 8 p.m. EST and will be broadcast on TNT and truTV. Fans looking to watch can do so for free by using DIRECTV, which offers a free trial. The Rangers are 19-18-5 coming into this matchup, having dropped three straight and nine of their last 13, with three of the four wins coming in that span coming in overtime or a shootout. On New Year’s Eve against the Washington Capitals, New York was on the wrong end of a 6-3 result in which they allowed at least 1 goal each period and scored 1 goal each period. Vincent Trocheck tied things up late in the first, but by the time Adam Fox found the back of the net in the second, the Rangers had already allowed a pair of goals that period and were trailing 3-2 going into the final 20 minutes. They allowed 2 more goals before Braden Schneider scored his second of the season, and then they allowed an empty-netter in the final minute to make it 6-3.
The Panthers are 21-15-3 and coming into this after an overtime loss to the Montreal Canadiens in Florida’s last game of 2025. All the action came after the first 50 minutes, starting with a Brad Marchand power play goal. That was followed up by a Sam Reinhart goal about five minutes later, and then about 30 seconds after Reinhart’s goal, the Canadiens got their first. And then they tied it inside the final 90 seconds, and won it less than four minutes into the extra period with a power play goal of their own.
