A pair of in-state rivals meet up on Thursday, Dec. 11 as the No. 4 Iowa State Cyclones host the Iowa Hawkeyes at Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa.

Iowa is 8-1, but that one loss came in the team’s only game against a ranked opponent so far, a 71-52 blowout loss on the road to No. 9 Michigan State. The Hawkeyes bounced back on Saturday with an 83-64 victory over Maryland, but with about a third of their remaining games against teams currently in the top 25, Thursday would be a good time to prove they won’t just be a walkover for other ranked teams. In the win over Maryland, Bennett Stirtz had a game-high 25 points along with two steals while Cam Manyawu added 12 points, seven board, three assists, two steals and a block. Cooper Kock went for 11 and Tate Sage chipped in 12 off the bench.
The Cyclones are 9-0 and coming off arguably the most impressive win in all of college basketball, an 81-58 demolition of then-No. 1 Purdue. Iowa State climbed six spots in the rankings and knocked Purdue down to No. 6 with that victory in which four of the five starters had double figures in scoring. Tamin Lipsey was the one who didn’t reach that threshold, and he had 9 points, eight assists and five rebounds in 32 minutes. Milan Momcilovic had 20 to lead all scorers while Killyan Toure, Blake Buchanan and Joshua Jefferson combined for 36 points, with Buchanan getting nine rebounds and two blocks, Jefferson getting two blocks and a steal and Toure getting a pair of steals and five boards.
