The NFC South is still wide open, but the Buccaneers currently claim the top spot despite having the same 7-6 record as the Carolina Panthers. Those teams will meet twice in the final three weeks of the season, but before that, Tampa Bay is looking to break out of this recent losing slump. The team had lost three straight before a Week 13 win over the Arizona Cardinals, 20-17. However, the Buccaneers followed that up last week with a 24-20 loss at home to the now 3-10 New Orleans Saints. Baker Mayfield completed fewer than half of his 30 pass attempts and finished with 122 passing yards, one touchdown and one interception along with 42 rushing yards. The team had 179 yards on the ground as Bucky Irving and Rachaad White combined for 108 yards. The team went two-for-seven on fourth down attempts and three-for-13 on third downs, essentially negating the advantages they could have earned by winning the yardage, time of possession and penalty battles.
Losers of seven of their last eight, the Falcons are just looking to be a spoiler as they are already eliminated from playoff contention. They will be without top receiver Drake London on Thursday and potentially tight end Kyle Pitts Sr., and will lean even more on running backs Bijan Robinson and Tyler Allgeier, especially after Kirk Cousins went 15-for-30 for 162 yards and two picks in the 37-9 loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.
These teams opened the season against each other and Emeka Egbuka had two touchdowns in his NFL Debut, including the game-winner in the 23-20 matchup, that essentially ended with a missed field goal by Younghoe Koo, who was cut by Atlanta after the game.
