A pair of squads that have become accustomed to playing in the College Football Playoff and SEC Championship games share the field on Saturday, Sept 27 when the No. 5 Georgia Bulldogs welcome the No. 17 Alabama Crimson Tide at Sanford Stadium in Athens, Ga.

FuboTV offers up to $30 off your first month. SlingTV doesn’t offer a free trial but has promotional offers available for streaming the game. Since 2017, these teams have played five times with a trophy on the line, with Alabama winning four of the five games, losing only the 2021 National Championship Game after beating Georgia in the SEC Championship a month prior. There isn’t a title on the line Saturday, but this contest could impact whether or not 3-0 Georgia or 2-1 Alabama are in position to play for a conference championship or national championship later in the season.
Last season the Crimson Tide pulled off an upset, winning 41-34 over the Bulldogs, but Kalen DeBoer’s squad followed up that win by going just 5-4 the rest of his first season with Alabama, missing the College Football Playoff and falling short of 10 wins for the first time since 2007, Nick Saban’s first season as head coach.
In last year’s meeting quarterback Jalen Milroe and wide receiver Ryan Williams were the stars for Alabama with Milroe throwing for 374 yards, two scores and a pick on 27-for-33 passing with 117 rushing yards and another two scores while Williams caught a game-high six passes for a game-high 177 yards and a touchdown. Georgia’s QB had a receiver duo to work with as Carson Beck, Dillon Bell and Arian Smith had the Bulldogs competing until the final whistle as Beck had 439 yards and three touchdowns while Smith had six catches, 132 yards and a score and Bell had five grabs for 100 yards and a score. But three picks from Beck and a game-winning 75-yard touchdown from Williams with 2:18 left in the fourth quarter sealed Georgia’s fate.
In this year’s game, only Williams and Bell will be on the field as Beck has left Georgia for the No. 2 Miami Hurricanes and Milroe and Smith have left for the NFL. Alabama has Ty Simpson taking snaps (64-for-89 for 862 yards, nine touchdowns and a rushing touchdown) and Georgia will have Gunner Stockton (63-for-89 for 721 yards, four passing touchdowns and three rushing scores) behind center.
