The NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs begin on Sunday, Aug. 31 when the Cook Out Southern 500 takes place at Darlington Raceway in Darlington, S.C.
This race is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. EDT and will be broadcast on USA Network. Fans looking to watch can do so for free by using DIRECTV, which offers a free trial. There are 16 drivers in the playoff pool that will trim to 12, then eventually eight, and then a final four. But eliminations don’t start until after three races take place, and Sunday’s is just the first.
Denny Hamlin enters the playoffs in third but he will have pole position for the Cook Out Southern 500. He is followed by Chase Briscoe (eighth in the playoff standings), Josh Berry (13th in the playoff standings), Tyler Reddick (14th in the playoff standings), and Kyle Larson (first in the playoff standings) to close out the top five.
For Berry, Reddick, Austin Dillon and Alex Bowman, these first four races are all about climbing above Joey Logan in 12th, and if possible, Ross Chastain in 11th or Austin Cindric in 10th.
Next week is the Enjoy Illinois 300, and then the Bass Pro Shops Night Race is the following week, and that is when the first four eliminations take place.
