SEATTLE — Right-handed pitcher Jordan Hicks, who the Red Sox acquired from the Giants in the Rafael Devers trade Sunday, is on the 15-day injured list with inflammation in his right big toe but he should be back fairly soon.
Hicks is eligible to come off the IL on Tuesday. But he will fly to Boston to throw a live BP there in the upcoming days, manager Alex Cora said.
“Then we’ll see where we’re at,” Cora said Monday before Boston’s 2-0 win against the Mariners at T-Mobile Park. “I don’t know if a rehab assignment is coming up. But he’s getting close.”
The 28-year-old Hicks struggled with the Giants this season, posting a 6.47 ERA in 13 outings (nine starts).
He had a 3.29 ERA in 65 relief outings in 2023.
“We’re absolutely excited about bringing Jordan Hicks, a dominant late-inning reliever, into our mix,” chief baseball officer Craig Breslow said.
Boston also acquired lefty Kyle Harrison in the trade and optioned him to Triple-A Worcester.
“We added some pieces that we do believe they’re gonna help us, especially obviously in the pitching department,” Cora said. “That’s something that we’ve been talking about throughout the offseason and early in the season — we have to pitch. And these two guys, in my opinion, they’re gonna impact the big league team at one point.”
Breslow added about Harrison: “Someone who we think can pitch in the front half of a rotation. We’ve identified some development opportunities for him that we’re going to work through.”
