What would Mookie Betts say if a free agent asked about playing for Red Sox?

BOSTON — As he sat in the Fenway Park media room as part of his first time back in Boston since he was traded in 2020, Mookie Betts deftly walked the line about how much he enjoyed Boston and how happy he was in Los Angeles.

Betts and the Dodgers will face his old team Friday night (7 p.m.), Saturday (4:10 p.m.) and Sunday afternoon (1:35), weather permitting.

He called Boston’s decision to trade him for Alex Verdugo and Connor Wong a business decision after he and the Red Sox couldn’t agree to a contract extension and said he had no hard feelings toward the organization where he spent the first six years of his Major League career.

Despite not coming to an agreement with the Boston front office, Betts said he wouldn’t dissuade a free agent from signing with the Red Sox if someone sought his advice.

“I would definitely recommend it. Boston is a super dope place to play,” said Betts, who won the 2018 American League MVP and helped lead the Red Sox to the World Series that year. “I had the time of my life playing here. A lot of people do. I would tell them ‘If you go up there, you know you’ve got to play well. There’s nothing else. I think that’s why I played well. I knew every day I put the uniform on. You’ve got to play well no matter what.

“The media, the fans, people will let you know. That’s the blessing. That’s what I enjoy,” he continued. “I would tell them, ‘Go. You’re going to have fun playing in Boston. You’re only going to have fun if you play well and that should drive you to play well.”
