What to know about sex abuse allegations against a Western Mass. girls’ school teacher

A former teacher at a Pittsfield girls’ boarding school has been accused of grooming and sexually abusing multiple students. Both the school and the Berkshire County District Attorney’s Office are now investigating, but media reports indicate that the school knew of the allegations against the teacher long before he resigned this spring.

In an email to MassLive, the district attorney’s office confirmed that there is a open investigation into 62-year-old Matthew Rutledge, who formerly taught history at Miss Hall’s School. Rutledge resigned from his position at the high school in late March after school administrators were notified of sexual misconduct allegations against him, according to a letter from Head of School Julie Heaton.
