What should Patriots do at trade deadline after ugly Week 8 loss? (Podcast)

The NFL trade deadline is Tuesday and it will be interesting to see what the Patriots end up doing. New England’s Week 8 loss to the Miami Dolphins continued to highlight the team’s struggles. And even though they faced some injuries throughout the game, it still might be seen as a defining loss.

Bill Belichick hasn’t given any indication about how he’ll approach the deadline, but the Patriots would benefit from getting some help in the form of draft picks so they can be a better team in 2024.

On the latest episode of “Eye On Foxborough,” MassLive Patriots reporters Chris Mason and Mark Daniels discuss how New England should approach Tuesday’s trade deadline.

“The Patriots should sell. They should sell, ring the bell, open for business. Put that sign up in the window, (say), ‘We’re open sell off Josh Uche and honestly Kyle Dugger,’” Daniels said. “I would sell up any free agents. There is no player on the Patriots roster outside of Christian Gonzalez that I wouldn’t trade. I have to be honest.”

Mason is of the belief the Patriots should be sellers, but doesn’t think many pieces will get moved.

“I do think they should sell, but I don’t think there’s gonna be a ton of pieces to get moved. That’s kind of the nature of the NFL trade deadline. It’s not like Major League Baseball’s,” Mason said. “But I do think Uche —we’ve talked about it — but he’s just the most likely to have value and be moved. Especially because we both think he’s gonna get paid this offseason and historically Bill never really pays that type of like 30% of the snap edge rusher that’s really just like a pass rush specialist. So I think someone’s gonna overpay for him and it makes sense to move him now and get something for him.”

The trade deadline is Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET. Whether Uche or Dugger will remain on the roster is to be determined. But we’ll soon find out what kind of direction the Patriots are going to take for the remainder of the 2023 season.
