What gambling odds say about Red Sox’ chances, Wilyer Abreu’s rookie year

The Red Sox officially passed the quarter pole of their season with Monday’s loss, and are now 21-20 through the first 41 games (25.3%) of an 162-game season. There are 4 ½ months of baseball left, but so far, we’ve learned a lot about the up-and-down, oft-injured Red Sox and their chances to contend in 2024.

But what do the sportsbooks think of the Red Sox? Let’s see what DraftKings SportsBook has to say:

Team odds

After Monday’s action, the Red Sox are 75/1 (+7500) to win the World Series and are tied with the Mets for the 19th-best odds to win it all this season. Only the Giants, Reds, Cardinals, Pirates, Angels, Nationals, Rockies, White Sox, Athletics and Marlins have worse odds.

In the American League, Boston is 35/21 (+3500) to win the pennant. There are three bad teams behind the Sox (the A’s, Angels and White Sox). The division odds aren’t pretty, either. The Red Sox are far-and-away the fifth-most likely team to win the American League East at 28/1 (+2800) behind the Yankees (-110), Orioles (+135), Blue Jays (+2000) and Rays (+2000)

Will the Red Sox make the playoffs? According to DraftKings, it’s +290 for YES and -360 for NO.

Award odds

The award odds are kinder to the Red Sox after some good individual performances to start the season. And as of now, they have at least one top-three candidate to take home some hardware.

Outfielder Wilyer Abreu (+650) has the third-best odds to win the American League Rookie of the Year, trailing only Baltimore’s Colton Cowser (+120) and Texas’ Evan Carter (+330). Ceddanne Rafaela is tied for the 10th-best odds at +3500 and Marcelo Mayer, who isn’t even at Triple-A yet, is a longshot at 90/1 (+9000).

The Red Sox also have a couple of fringe contenders for Cy Young in Tanner Houck, who is tied for ninth at 15/1 (+1500) and Kutter Crawford, who is tied for 15th at 35/1 (+3500). Two others who have missed time with injuries are longshots with Nick Pivetta and Brayan Bello both priced at 80/1 (+8000). Detroit’s Tarik Skubal (+250) and Baltimore’s Corbin Burnes (+450) are the favorites.

In the AL MVP race, Tyler O’Neill is the Sox’ top contender at tied for 15th with 50/1 (+5000) odds. Corner infielders Triston Casas (despite being injured) and Rafael Devers are tied for 16th at +6000 (60/1) and there are a couple of down-ballot options in Masataka Yoshida at 100/1 (+10000) and Jarren Duran at 150/1 (+15000). The favorites are the Yankees’ Juan Soto (+200), Kansas City’s Bobby Witt Jr. (+250) and Baltimore shortstop Gunnar Henderson (+500).
