What does latest report suggest for Bill Belichick’s future? (Podcast)

Bill Belichick’s future as the coach of the Patriots has been called into question more often than not this season. And with two games left on the 2023 schedule, more reports have begun to surface regarding where things stand with the legendary coach and New England.

Boston Sports Journal’s Mike Giardi reported that Belichick has “expressed doubt” about his future to Patriots staffers, while another report from NFL Network suggested he has yet to discuss next steps with ownership.

On the latest episode of “Eye On Foxborough,” MassLive Patriots reporters Chris Mason and Mark Daniels discussed some recent reports of Belichick not sitting down with the Krafts and that the 71-year-old isn’t confident in his future in New England.

“It say it all. The fact that Robert Kraft hasn’t talked to him about his future tells me that Bill Belichick is about to be fired/they’ll do something like a mutual parting of the ways. But really he’s going to be fired,” Daniels said. “It’s interesting because you have Woody Johnson, the Jets owner, who came up publicly and said that Robert Saleh will be back next year. And that’s something an owner historically does around this time of the year.

“… So the fact that, one, Kraft hasn’t met with Bill about it tells me he’s done with Bill. And two, the fact that Bill Belichick has been telling other coaches on the coaching staff that he has a feeling this is the end, who better than Bill Belichick to actually know, right?,” he added.

Mason believes the “total radio silence” from the Krafts is actually saying quite a bit about what New England’s next move will be.

“I think the silence from the Krafts, though, speaks volumes,” he said. “They ducked the media at the fall meetings, they didn’t do any there. They haven’t spoken at all since then. No interviews, no nothing. It’s been total radio silence beyond what you would ever expect, and it’s awkward.”

For now, Belichick remains the coach. If that’s the case after their final game of the 2023 season remains to be seen. But the Patriots are preparing for a Week 17 matchup against the Buffalo Bills as they look to end their season on a high note and set their sights on the 2024 NFL Draft.
