What do Patriots do at quarterback going forward? (podcast)

The Patriots’ ugly 2023 season got even uglier Sunday when they lost 10-7 to Tommy DeVito and the New York Giants to fall to 2-9. Mac Jones once again struggled and threw two interceptions, while Bailey Zappe — who started the second half — also threw a pick.

At this point, the only thing New England is fighting for is 2024 draft position. And given how Jones hasn’t shown much improvement from week to week, it will beg another week of “Will Bailey Zappe be the Patriots starting quarterback” questions leading into Sunday’s game.

On the latest episode of “Eye On Foxborough,” MassLive Patriots reporters Mark Daniels and Chris Mason discussed what they believe the Patriots should do moving forward at quarterback after yet another ugly loss.

“I don’t know what they do at quarterback moving forward. Both guys are such a mess,” Mason said. “I mean they they cut Will Grier (Saturday) who seemed like maybe he’ll pop in and be able to do something. Malik Cunningham hasn’t been practicing at quarterback since the Raiders game. I have no idea where they go from here but I know it’s gonna be ugly.”

Daniels agreed with Mason that things will be ugly from here on out, but has an idea as to what the Patriots should do when it comes to their quarterback.

“You have to start Bailey Zappe. That’s the truth. You have to give Bailey Zappe a full week of starter reps because Mac Jones is broken,” Daniels said. “My opinion is you roll with Bailey Zappe beat against Justin Herbert and the Los Angeles Chargers — a team that has also been struggling defensively. There’s no way you can get Mac Jones another start right now. … Bailey Zappe is not a better quarterback than Mac Jones. But right now he has more confidence than Mac Jones.”

Unsurprisingly, Bill Belichick didn’t name a starter for Week 13 when the Patriots host the Chargers, but did say, “there’s an opportunity for everyone.

The Patriots might have hit their lowest point Sunday in their loss to the Giants, so it certainly wouldn’t hurt if they rolled with Zappe next week.
