WESTFIELD — As Mayor Michael McCabe opened the ceremony to announce that Laurie Matthews and Danny Nason were chosen as the “Extra Mile Heroes” Volunteers of the Year, he spoke to what is the most valued aspect of the community.
“It’s our people very clearly and most importantly this group of volunteers because, quite honestly, we can’t do the things we do for the city without you,” he said during the ceremony held Thursday to recognize seven of the city’s most dedicated volunteers on Extra Mile Day, a national initiative by Extra Mile America to celebrate those who “go the extra mile” in their communities.
