Westfield numbers show work remains in educational recovery from pandemic

WESTFIELD — It’s going to take time, and effort, to return to pre-pandemic levels of student achievement and attendance, administrators told School Committee members this week.

Christine Shea, director of assessment and accountability, said Westfield’s public schools saw generally better test scores and less chronic absenteeism last school year as compared to 2021-22, but both measurements remain worse than they were in 2018-19, the last complete school year before the COVID-19 pandemic.

“In two to three years, we’re hoping that our schools are at least back to our 2019 pre-pandemic results, if not exceeding those,” Shea told the School Committee on Monday.
