Westfield Health Bulletin: Washing hands is still the best first line of defense

Wash your hands. We have all been told this countless times. I have consistently written wash your hands in any article about infectious diseases and with good reason. It is estimated that if everyone washed their hands when they should, one million lives could be saved yearly worldwide. It is so simple and so often overlooked. One does not fully realize the butterfly effect of choosing to wash or not wash their hands.

Dr. Robert H. Hopkins Jr., medical director of the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases states, “Given the importance of handwashing in infectious disease prevention, the stakes are high — improving hand hygiene can help improve health for all.”

The NFID was founded in 1973. It is an independent, non-profit organization with a goal of “educating and engaging the public, communities and healthcare professionals about infectious diseases across the lifespan.”
