Sweltering, oppressive and high temperatures are not only uncomfortable but can be deadly. Never, never, never leave a child, pet or disabled person in a vehicle unattended. A quick run into the post office or forgetting to drop your child at day care can lead to an irreversible tragedy. National Highway Safety Administration reports that children dying in hot cars is increasing.
On average 38 children a year die from preventable heatstroke deaths after being left in cars. Data from 1998-2022 show 1,026 children, ages 5 days to 14 years, needlessly die left in hot cars. About half of those deaths were children under two years of age. It can take as little as 10 minutes. So far this year, 16 children’s lives have been cut short.
Statistically this may seem a small number of deaths, any senseless death is too many. Each death is a great loss and unimaginable emotional trauma for parents, friends, family, neighbors and the community.
