Westfield Health Bulletin: staying safe is the best Halloween treat of all

The most elaborate, creative and scary costume isn’t the most frightening thing about Halloween. Nor is an excellently crafted haunted house or home display. The most terrifying fact about Halloween is that children are twice as likely to be hit by a car and killed while out trick-or-treating.

Halloween celebrations date back over 2,000 years. The point of celebrating Halloween is getting scared without any true danger. Yearly, I and thousands of others repeatedly write about the actual dangers lurking on Halloween with good reason — to prevent needless deaths and injuries and to have fun and stay safe!

When planning a costume, make sure it fits. Always check that it is made of fire-resistant material. Avoid flowing or large bulky costumes. Wear shoes that fit. Use reflective tape on costumes and bags.
