Westfield Head Start loses projected new home, complicating Fort Meadow move

WESTFIELD — During his update to the School Committee on Feb. 5, Mayor Michael McCabe spoke at length about problems regarding the anticipated move of the Fort Meadow Early Childhood program into the city-owned space currently occupied by Head Start at 390 Southampton Road.

McCabe said he had been informed in November by Head Start Director Mary Clare Higgins that the building their program had intended to move into had fallen through, and they currently had no place else to go for their morning and afternoon half-day sessions.

“The Head Start acquisition of another building fell through, [and] left 92 kids with no place to go — not a position the mayor wants to find himself in. Of those 92, 60 are from Westfield,” McCabe said at the meeting.
