Westfield downtown menorah lighting ‘celebrating light in midst of darkness’

WESTFIELD — Community leaders in Westfield are looking to this weekend’s menorah lighting ceremony as a light in the darkness.

The event at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 10, is called “Latkes and Lights.” It will start with a public candle lighting of the large community menorah at Park Square. Rabbi Shahar Colt, of Westfield’s Congregation Ahavas Achim, will discuss the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah and its meaning. Mayor Michael McCabe will attend and speak as well. Afterwards, attendees can meet at First United Methodist Church, 16 Court St., for latkes, the traditional fried potato pancakes served at Hanukkah.

“I think that we’re looking forward to the event and we are grateful for the collaboration with the mayor’s office that makes this possible,” said Colt.
