This week’s Western Mass. girls lacrosse rankings delivered the biggest shake-up of the season, with several teams making significant moves as the postseason looms.
The top three—East Longmeadow, West Springfield, and Longmeadow—held their ground, but the rankings right below them intensified. To start, Northampton, riding a five-game win streak, leapfrogged Amherst to claim the No. 4 spot.
Amherst’s impressive nine-game win streak came to a halt last week, as they dropped two tightly contested, one-goal games to Wahconah and No. 10 Hoosac Valley. The loss to Hoosac Valley was especially tough to swallow.
Amherst controlled the game for much of the afternoon, even stretching their lead to four goals midway through the third quarter. But Hoosac Valley clawed their way back with a 6-1 run. Star attacker Emma Meczywor delivered the game-winning goal with just 6:15 left to clinch a gritty 12-11 comeback win.
To their credit, Amherst responded with a vengeance, steamrolling Lee in a 15-1 blowout on May 13 to get back in the win column.
Further down the rankings, Chicopee made a huge statement, vaulting three spots from No. 10 to No. 7. The Pacers are in the midst of a historic season—their best since the program’s inception in 2015 under coach Ashley Ziemba.
They’ve ripped off 13 straight wins, their only blemish an early-season loss to Hoosac Valley. Now, with just one game remaining against Hampshire Regional on May 15, a victory would crown Chicopee as league champions for the first time ever.
This remarkable run has been powered by a dynamic young core. Freshman midfielders Sophia Moreira and Kiyah Price, alongside sophomore Cassidy Pytel, have been electrifying, with the team averaging 15.2 goals per game this season. Senior Goalkeeper Nyeira Wilson has been another crucial contributor, recently notching her 200th career save in a matchup against Springfield Central.
As the regular season winds down, the focus now shifts to the upcoming Western Mass. playoff seedings for lacrosse, set to be revealed next week on Tuesday, May 20. The postseason action will ramp up quickly, with semifinals for each class set to begin the following day, Wednesday, May 21.
