Western Massachusetts residents placed orders for a local restaurant but when DoorDash drivers arrived, there was no food waiting.
The restaurant’s account was a scam.
“Folks: once again, we find ourselves as the victim of internet spoofing,” Cima Restaurant & Chop House wrote on the Wilbraham open forum Facebook group.
The Wilbraham Italian restaurant said DoorDash drivers had been showing up to pick up food for the “past couple of nights” looking for orders placed on DoorDash. But those orders don’t exist in the restaurant’s internal ordering system because they don’t work with DoorDash or any other third party delivery services.
“Apparently, some nefarious character decided to create a DoorDash ‘merchant account’ in Cima’s name (using a fictitious email address, no less) and the company never bothered to confirm the validity of said account,” the restaurant wrote on Facebook.
MassLive reached out to DoorDash for comment.
“… and we only hope they’ll receive a full refund due to DoorDash’s error,” the restaurant wrote.
It is unclear if those users got a refund as it is left up to DoorDash.
In June 2024, the company announced it was releasing “additional steps to prevent fraud and support merchants.”
“We use a variety of risk-related data signals to detect signs of potential fraudulent behavior, which triggers a request for merchants to re-verify their identity, and ensure they are who they say they are,” DoorDash wrote in a press release.
Fake DoorDash accounts have also been causing issues in other parts of the country, including San Antonio.
The fake DoorDash account for the Massachusetts restaurant has been removed as of Tuesday morning.
However, Western Massachusetts residents can still order takeout from Cima Restaurant & Chop House. It just needs to be over the phone, the restaurant said.
