WESTFIELD – There are modern day pro football quarterbacks like Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson who often lean on their legs and feet as much as or even more than their throwing arm to move the ball. On Friday night, the Westfield High School football team met the high school version of those legendary QBs in the form of West Springfield junior quarterback Abel Varzeas.
Varzeas ran the ball 17 times for 207 yards and three touchdowns in quarterbacking West Springfield past Westfield 35-20 at Bullens Field.
“He’s a big, strong, physical runner who’s going to win games with his legs,” Westfield football coach Rob Parent said of West Springfield’s field general. “Their running back, [senior Benjamin Tokarev], and their quarterback are big, strong runners, very physical. You’re not going to arm tackle those guys. We did a bit too much reach and grab, not enough running our legs and that’s what you get. They run the ball at you and we didn’t make any stops.”
