Weather alert announced for black ice in 9 Massachusetts counties until Sunday morning

A weather alert was issued by the National Weather Service on Sunday at 4:45 a.m. for black ice until 9 a.m. for Northern Worcester and Southern Worcester as well as Franklin, Middlesex, Essex, Hampshire, Hampden, Norfolk, Suffolk, Bristol and Plymouth counties.

“Patchy black ice is possible this morning, as temperatures have fallen below freezing. Moisture remaining from yesterday’s rain is refreezing, creating slick conditions on untreated surfaces like sidewalks, driveways, and bridges. Conditions will improve later this morning as temperatures rise above freezing. Motorist and pedestrians should use caution. Reduce speed, allow extra time, and be prepared for areas of slippery travel,” states the weather service.
