Warm stretch continues Wednesday across Mass. with ‘garden variety’ thunderstorms possible

Temperatures will remain high across Massachusetts on Wednesday, though Bay Staters will get some relief from the warm stretch in the way of declining humidity.

It will largely be a cloudy day, with sunshine breaking through first in the northwestern part of the state in the afternoon. Still, clouds are expected to linger over the southeast coast.

National Weather Service forecasters also anticipate some “scattered, unorganized showers” primarily south of the Massachusetts Turnpike, but also along the immediate coast. Some “garden variety” thunderstorms are possible as well, given temperatures in the 70s and 80s and dewpoints in the 70s.

But unlike Tuesday, most parts of the state should stay below 90 degrees, with Boston and Springfield forecasted to reach 88, and Worcester projected to reach 86.

The cloud cover projected to dominate much of Wednesday is expected to clear out by Thursday morning. The warm stretch will continue but humidity will continue to fall, creating more pleasant conditions.

Temperatures could rise as high as the low 90s across the state, with dewpoints remaining in the upper 50s or low 60s.

An area of low pressure is set to approach the state on Thursday as a cold front swings through, “kicking off scattered showers and thunderstorms, some of which could be strong to severe.”

“The best chance of severe weather is in the interior,” forecasters wrote. “For now, all of southern New England is under a marginal risk of severe weather.”

Real relief from the heat arrives just in time for the 4th of July holiday, with temperatures peaking in the upper 70s to low 80s. More heat arrives on the heels of the holiday, with temperatures climbing back up to the 90s on Sunday or Monday.
