Warm and humid Tuesday across Mass. ahead of showers, thunderstorms

It may be fall, but Massachusetts will see conditions more akin to summer for most of the day Tuesday, thanks to a warm and increasingly humid airmass.

High temperatures should reach up to the upper 70s or low 80s for most of the state, according to the National Weather Service. Coupled with climbing dewpoints, Tuesday will feel “like a summer day with warm and humid conditions.”

But the warmth may not last long, as a cold front is expected to arrive in the region Tuesday afternoon. The front will “serve as a focus for scattered showers and thunderstorms, mainly in the interior after 2 p.m.,” forecasters wrote.

The chances of a severe storm are rather low, but there is a chance for locally heavy rainfall, forecasters wrote.

The threat of showers and thunderstorms will continue into the evening, with the cold front expected to stall near the South Coast. As much as 2 inches of rain could fall Tuesday night, with the northern part of the state at the highest risk of significant rainfall, forecasters said.

Wednesday brings much cooler temperatures, with highs in the upper 60s or low 70s. The risk for showers continues throughout the day, with a chance for a rumble of thunder in Southwestern Massachusetts.

Another round of widespread showers and storms is expected Thursday into Thursday night, though the exact timing is unclear at this point. It’s also unclear when the showers exit, but forecasters expect the rain to linger into Friday.

“Preliminary estimate is for 0.50 to 1.50 inches of rain, which would be much needed,” forecasters wrote.

It will become humid Thursday into Thursday night, with a warm and humid Friday ahead.

Looking ahead to the weekend, Saturday appears to be a warm day with above-normal temperatures. The warm and dry conditions are likely to continue into Sunday and Monday.
