Vikings cut former Patriots second-round bust

Joejuan Williams started Vikings camp working with the Minnesota first-team defense. He ended it unemployed.

The Patriots, who have no players remaining from their 2019 draft class on the roster, saw their top three picks from that draft all cut by other teams before Tuesday’s 53-man roster deadline.

The Vikings, who’d previously cut N’Keal Harry, the Patriots’ first-round pick from the 2019 draft, also let go Williams, who New England selected in the second after an outstanding career at Vanderbilt. The Houston Texans cut third-round pick Chase Winovich on Tuesday.

Williams, 25, played his first three seasons in New England and appeared in 36 games as a reserve. He missed all of the 2022 season with a shoulder injury.

Williams signed with the Vikings in the offseason and had a strong start to camp under former defensive coordinator Brian Flores, who’d been in New England with Williams.

At 6-foot-3, Williams’ size has always intrigued coaches, but he hasn’t played well enough to find a regular role in the NFL.
