GLENDALE, Ariz. — Two men were arrested after a dramatic robbery and pursuit involving a man carrying $50,000 in cash to buy a car, AZFamily reported.
The incident began when suspects spotted the victim withdrawing cash at bank on Nov.7. The suspects then followed the victim and the victim’s son to a car seller’s home in Glendale, according to the report.
While the victim waited for the seller, he began counting cash in his car, unaware he was being followed, according to court documents. When the seller arrived, the victim and his son got out of their vehicle to speak with him. During the conversation, the seller noticed one of the suspects stealing the cash from the victim’s car. The victim and his son quickly called 911, provided the suspects’ license plate number to police and began pursuing them.
“A chase took place, and what happened next looks like something out of the movie ‘The Italian Job,’” Glendale Police stated in a social media post.
The “pursuit” ended several miles away where the suspects ran a red light and crashed into a flatbed trailer.
After the crash, both suspects fled on foot. Surveillance footage showed the victim and his son chasing them on foot. The father caught one suspect after a scuffle but stopped to collect dropped cash, allowing the man to run away again. Police later arrested the suspect in a nearby dirt field.
The victim’s son chased the other suspect, who was found and arrested in a neighborhood shortly after.
Police recovered more than $47,000 from the suspects’ vehicle, according to the report. The suspects face burglary and theft charges.
“First responders…put their lives on the line every single time they respond to an incident,” Traffic Safety Director Mike Hanson said. “The least we can do is drive in a safe and appropriate manner”
